Have you used centers or math rotations in your classroom in the past? Are you feeling unsure how to continue using this format virtually or with social distancing? I have taught my math block through rotations, or centers, for years now and have found my students to be MUCH more successful in math. Last Spring, when we moved into virtual teaching, I immediately thought that I needed to go back to whole group math and that rotations were not going to be able to happen anymore. I was SO disappointed by this! After some thought, I found a way to continue using the math rotations format in a virtual setting and it was a success!! Are you curious on what this looks like?
These digital math rotation units include everything that you need for both the student and teacher to be able to implement the unit! Check out the sneak peek of one of my digital math rotations unit below. You will get a glimpse into what is included in a digital math rotations unit and how I have made math rotations STILL work in a virtual classroom!
Each digital math rotations lesson starts with slides that help guide a teacher on giving a short LIVE mini-lesson or on creating a short video mini-lesson ( both are 10-15 minutes) . These slides have visuals that address the vocabulary and strategies used in the lesson. I highly recommend that each math rotations lesson starts with a mini-lesson.
After the introductory mini-lesson, students are ready to move into their rotations. In Google Classroom, students find the student rotation board for that day that gives them directions, materials and resources for each lesson. In each rotation, students are doing an activity to practice the skill being taught that day or reviewing a skill that has been taught in the past. Check out the picture above to see an example of what this board looks like in my place value digital rotations unit.
While students are doing the rotations, I, the teacher, pull small groups of students to work on differentiated small group lessons around that skill. This is a great way to continue to reach all your learners like you did in small groups in the classroom!
