If you ask an upper elementary teacher what activities they need for their classroom in December, you will often hear the following: “I need activities that are minimal prep because December is a busy month” or “I need activities that will hold my student’s attention and help with engagement”. Can you relate to either or both of these statements?
I am here to help YOU! Today, I am going to share with you some of my favorite activities to use in December because they are minimal prep, can be used year after year and hold my student’s attention. December Activity #1: Winter Around the Room Word Problem Activity
This activity will have your students moving around the classroom to solve word problems! We all know that students are extra wiggly in December. So, instead of asking them to stay in their seats, use these 3rd and 4th Grade Winter themed Around the Room word problem sets to embrace those wiggles!
December Activity #2: Escape the Winter Storm Problem Solving Escape Room
Escape rooms are always a student favorite, but they can be a lot of prep. on the teacher. I created a low prep math problem solving escape room that can be used year after year. Trust me, your students will love this activity and it is a great activity to use the last week before break or when you are coming back from break!
December Activity #3: Christmas Math Tales Word Problem Activity
Help your students problem solve using word problems they create! I loved Mad Libs growing up. So, I created Math Tales. in the same format to help my students with problem solving. This Christmas themed version will get your students excited to solve word problems that they have created.
December Activity #4: Christmas Multiplication Fact Finder
Your students will LOVE solving multiplication facts to uncover a fun facts about Christmas. These differentiated Fact Finders are a great morning work, center, take-home over break and early finisher activity to use in December.
December Activity #5: Division and Multiplication Winter Themed Task Cards
Add a little excitement to your task cards by having Winter themed task cards! Task cards are a great minimal prep activity that can be used throughout the whole month. I have used these task cards for years. TIP: If you want to use them over and over, print on cardstock, laminate and put on a binder ring, like you see in the picture below.
December Activity #6: Winter Color-By-Number Multiplication Fact Practice
My students always love anything that involves coloring and I love finding a meaningful activity that is easy to pull out when you have a couple extra minutes. These colored by number pages are easy to print and have on hand to use throughout the month of December to help your students practice their multiplication facts. Your students will be so excited to color while they practice their facts!
